A hijacker was killed during an attempted hijacking of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane en route to Dubai from Dhaka via Chittagong this evening.
The hijacker claimed himself as Mehedi, a youth around 25 years of age, armed with gun tried to storm the cockpit on a flight #BG147 with 148 passengers.
The plane landed at Chittagong airport and all passengers were evacuated, leaving gunmen and two crew members were still on board.
Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong was under cordon for hours that ended around 7:25pm.
“The suspect had a pistol. He was killed in commando operation,” said Maj Gen Motiur Rahman, general commanding officer in Chattogram, in a briefing at the airport around 8.25pm.
He said the para-commandos had asked the armed hijacker to surrender during the raid. “But he rejected, and tried to retaliate, which led to the exchange of fire., “The suspect was apprehended with gunshot injuries, but we have learnt that he died later.”
